Bukowski is a weird one for me. Some of his poems are my all time favorites. I love much of his work and own most it, but I don't like him as a person. It takes away from his work.when I read something of his that makes me laugh I can't help but think 'the person that wrote this, the person that is making me laugh, was a complete asshole.' No one can deny it, because he didn't even try to hide it.
He was a complete asshole.I always think about authors when reading, all the time. I don't look at the authors picture or biography until after I'm done reading because I will just think about them writing what I'm reading the entire time. I've been reading some Jane Austen and am constantly picturing her sitting at some desk writing and thinking of this story.

I imagine her being sent here via time machine and what she would think. They are always in my head. Every book, I do this to. My point is, who the author is, is a big deal for me.Putting who he was as a person behind me, I will say I like his work because it is blunt, occasionally funny, honest, raw, and sad. A lot of his work is very sexual which isn't my favorite genre (especially knowing how he treated women) but he definitely has some good stuff and I am glad that it's around for me to read. I have been trying to formulate a way to describe how I feel about Bukowski for a while now and could never fully explain how i feel about him.
You nailed it on the head for me. I have found some of his poems incredibly relatable and moving, making me not feel so alone sometimes.
But i dont look up to him. I dont like him as a person and i dont like his attitudes towards women. I dont read so i can read about peoples sexual encounters. Hes a weird one for me too. I went from buying his poetry books a lot and reading them frequently to now, i havent read anything by him in years now and dont plan on it anytime soon.

He was the right writer at the right time. He'd be hard pressed to get so much attention nowadays, although I'm sure feminist criticism would be a double-edged sword for a Modern Day Bukowski.Personally I find his writing insufferable, but to each their own. Where Hunter S. Thompson provided a little more depth and personal insight, Bukowski added more depravity and pseudo machismo. In the end they were both drunks and drug addicts. The only thing that separated them was how bitter they were in analyzing their surroundings.
